Accident waiting to happen?

Lamp post on Killeen Road, TraleeAlthough I do agree with the road safety experts that the biggest risk factor for traffic accidents is usually the guy sitting in front of the steering wheel I am also quite sure that sometimes the road planning (and building) people too have to take their share of the responsibility when disaster strikes.

What I found yesterday when passing Killeen Road (near the new Rock Street roundabout) seems to be a very bad example when it comes to passive road safety. This unfortunate lamp post sits around half a meter away from the kerb right on the tarmac, and although the respective lane is marked as a bus stop it would be an almost safe bet to predict that one day some unfocused driver will hit the big and heavy street lamp. Given the fact that the nearest building is a school I suppose that there are times when many children will be on the footpath right under that lamp. This would then be a bloody dangerous and unnecessary situation. Probably the lamp has been there before the bus stop was built (or maybe even planned), but it can’t be that expensive to move the post a meter or two back, away from the street. It could save the life of a child. Maybe your child?
