Farewell old house
Less than three months after the opening of the new eight screen omniplex next to the Aqua Dome the picture to the right shows what once was the old four screen cinema, which had been situated between Siamsa Tire and The Square opposite the huge (but still mainly empty) Galeria building. As you can see there is nothing left but a pile of debris.
But the place well probably not be vacant for long. The planning enquiry system of Kerry County Council has details of a proposed new “retail development within 3 storey building consisting of anchor retail unit no. 6 (6830 sq. m.), 5 no. ground floor retail units nos. 1 - 5 (1,040 sq. m.), - total 8,510 sq. m. (…)”. So there will be another 8500 square meters of retail space? That’s quite a lot I suppose, although I agree with the planners that a location like that in the heart of the town (and the pedestrian zone) is probably best utilized with retail facilities. If you want to find out more check the planning system, the number is 067168 (for a quick search enter it here).
