…is growing in the centre of the town. The new Penneys Superstore (Castle Street) which was announced for opening in spring 2008 is now set to start trading as early as december. The scale of the completely new building will be somewhat greater than the size of the shop front might suggest.

I took a photo of the western side of the store from the top storey of the town centre carpark that shows its dimensions in relation to the adjoining buildings. The church tower of St. John’s in the background gives a hint on the height of the development. Given the fact that the new store sits in a sensitive area amidst the historic centre of the town I find its straighforward architecture quite daring. We’ll see how it will align with the other shops once the scaffolding has gone. The old store has been in operation until as late as march this year.
